Curating texture in your space
The very first question we ask any new client is: “how do you want to feel in this space?” Based on the answer to this question, we can begin the design process. How you want to feel in your space helps us as designers see the bigger picture of your ultimate dreams and goals. And to achieve those goals, we will look to the element of texture.
Texture is one of the major contributing factors to how you will feel in a space. Every item in your home has texture and is contributing to the overall feel. Many pieces in your home, based on their texture, can create continuous and sometimes changing intimate, grounded, sleek or even contemporary vibes.
We often are drawn to different textures, but deliberately choosing textures in both tactile and visual ways will truly transform your space to give it the feeling you are hoping for.
Tactile textures relate to the tangible surfaces. And visual textures are derived from the way the surface appears to the eye. The two, are symbiotic, because visual texture is an illusion from tactile textures.
In our studio, we delight in carefully curating materials and pieces that generate a home’s purpose, and we want to share with you just three elements that are often an after thought, but are are actually incredibly important for generating texture, and setting the tone in your space.
Take it from us, you want wallpaper, you need lighting and you absolutely must have an incredible rug.
Wallpaper
There are so many beautiful wallpaper options out there, and there is absolutely something to fit the feeling you are aiming for in your space. Wallpaper is not dissimilar to magic. It’s texture will influence the reflection of light in the space, which will transform the feel of the room. Rough or coarse textured wallpaper, lends a warm feeling to the room because it reflect less light, and helps with acoustics in a space. At the other end, there are wallpapers with smooth and tiny textures, which can present a cooler impression and give a more modern, sleek appearance in your room.
At the moment here are some wallpapers we’re obsessing over.
Lighting
Lighting is one of the biggest contributors to texture in your home. It can make a space feel warm, or soft, or harsh. Just think about how the lighting in a hospital, versus the lighting in your favourite little Italian restaurant makes you feel. When we speak about lighting, we don’t just mean a light fixture, although the selection of light fixtures out there are amazing! You also need to choose the right temperature of bulb, and even spread out varied light sources in the room, including placing them at different levels to create lighting layers, which layer your textures. Lighting is a visual texture, which works with the tactile textural elements. It reflects on smooth surfaces which give a cooling effect, and when it reflects on raised textures it can generate warmth and cosiness.
Here is what is lighting up our world in the light department at the moment.
